Bird Don't Lie

Not quite a song about gypsies. Close, though.

Thank you, Lauren, for the introduction.

Alabama Chicken is track 4 on Alabama Chicken. I like albums named after songs better than albums named after artists, unless the album named after the artist includes a song named after the artist. Wilco on Wilco by Wilco, for example. The only example?

Ask the Forest Fire

Having seen them both on stage, I think it's possible that Conor Oberst is actually Jason Schwartzman.

He and The Mystic Valley Band have been opening for Wilco.

I Got The Reason 2 was the song I liked best the other night. The recoding below is from a World Cafe appearance last September. I found it here. The studio version is track 15 on Outer South.

Imagine Max Fischer stepping to the mic...

Remember to Remember Me

Over and over again since the show on Friday.

Heard the song plenty before, but something about seeing it live made it click.

Maybe it was the guitar version of the violin solo. Or maybe I just simply paid attention for the first time.

Plenty of songs,
Right under our noses,
That we'll someday realize we love.

Hummingbird is track 5 on A Ghost Is Born.

Cold as Gasoline

Headed to the minor league ballpark for the Wilco show tonight.

Never seen them live. Excited.

I think this song's about why they play their music together, why it takes two wings to make love fly, and why we'll need a whole lot of surrender and compassion and introspection and collaboration if we're going to change this world (which we are).

Solitaire is track 8 on Wilco.

Them's Got Ears

Christmas makes me think of the Joan Baez record that Mom always rocks in the 20s of December.  Joan Baez makes me think of Woodstock.  Woodstock makes me think of Arlo Guthrie.  Arlo makes me think of Woody Guthrie.  And Woody makes me think of Mermaid Avenue and Wilco.

Woody Guthrie wrote a poem called Airline to Heaven.  Wilco and Billy Bragg turned it into track 1 on Mermaid Avenue Vol. II.  And this is Wilco playing it live: track 5 on disc 2 of Kicking Television.

As Dirt Becomes the Butterflies

Heard this song on the radio yesterday.  It hooked me on first listen, which is impressive, especially for the radio.

It was WXPN, however, the station that introduced me to Wilco.

The Rabbit, the Bat, and the Reindeer, is track 5 on Fate.  It's also an enjoyably obscure and animal-related three part title, which is extra special exciting.

Ordinary Beehives

I don't understand this song, but I love it, and I think its last lines pertain somehow to the incredible feeling of pride and relief I felt when I turned the TV back on the other night and realized that I am not always a statistical outlier.

Our voices lift so easily,
A gift given accidentally,
When were not sure
We're not alone.

You Are My Face is track 2 on Sky Blue Sky.

A Second Chance

I first listened to Wilco's Sky Blue Sky over a year ago.  The circumstances should have been absolutely ideal for music introduction, but somehow it didn't work out that way.  It was an intense 24 hour moment, the beginnings of my move from Beijing back to the USA, and I guess I was distracted.  I walked away unconvinced.

Luckily, a few weeks ago, the album popped up again.  In totally different circumstances.  And I listened again.  And listened well.  And loved it.

The first song is Either Way.  Short.  Quiet.  Leads with the word maybe .  Which, in my opinion, is a great way to start an album.  With a little mystery.

I can't help but wonder about that first introduction.  I'm surprised it didn't stick.  It should have.

But all's good now.  Delayed gratification I guess.  Accidentally delayed.

Either Way is track 1 on Sky Blue Sky.
