Freestyle

I went swimming today, and I got out of the pool with lots of ridiculous thoughts and questions about swimming and freestyle and evolution and hydrodynamics (which, according to the little red underlines that keep my spelling honest in Firefox, is, in fact, a real word) splashing in my waterlogged brain, so I figured I'd throw them up on the blog.

I made the mistake, however, of checking my facts on Wikipedia.  It answered all my questions and left me postless.  So I figured I'd post about my postlessness instead.

And I figured I'd note the fact that swimmers participating in pure "freestyle" races are free to choose whatever stroke (strokes?) they want to swim, while swimmers swimming the "freestyle" legs of medley races are not allowed to swim breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly.  They are, however, allowed to dog paddle.

I figured this was extremely important information to share in preparation for the Olympics.

Why I Miss Beijing

The reason the second to last one is my favorite is that it adds that extra little bit of ridiculousness.  Not only does athletic instinct kick in and she takes him down, but she also grabs the flowers and runs away, and doing that is totally weird and has nothing to do with her sport.  It's just a tack-on.  A goofy little tack-on that doesn't quite fit the theme but still adds value.
