A Useful Reminder

The Hype Machine uses that as their file not found error message.

Better than Twitter's Fail Whale, I think.

Which segues nicely into...

Twitter is electric/computerized and available at all times, except when sexual misconduct and murder are "over capacity." During these times, teen drug makers see a picture of a dead whale alerting them to bad energy.

Thank you Timothy McSweeney and Dan Kennedy.

Start Making a Fool Out of Me

After I hearing this song over on 8tracks, I looked The Zutons up on Hype Machine.  Here's the first paragraph I read about them:

For those wondering who The Zutons are lemme warn you. They aren't normal fare for ninebullets. The Zutons are an indie-pop rock band from Liverpool that writes largely disposable music aimed towards the iPod generation. Still, I think there is a place for the "more hooks than substance" cd section on everyone's rack. Sometimes you're in the mood for the musical equivalent of Chinese food when you head to the cd rack, and The Zutons are the kind of band that fills that need. Great for the car on your Saturday night drive out the the club.

Disposable?  Harsh.

I won't throw you away, Zutons.  Hook to substance ratios are debatable.  And you gotta love songs named after girls.  It's fun to wonder what the muses think of the work they inspire.  If they realize they inspire it, of course.

Valerie is track 3 on Tired of Hanging Around.

With Trouble on His Mind

Thought about The Grateful Dead and the song Looks Like Rain today.

Though about...

But I'll still sing you love songs
Written in the letters of your name

I looked it up to make sure I'd had it right, and I bumped into this.  Not a pretty website, sadly, but full of fun little theories.

I'd post the song, but neither I not any Hype Machine blogs have it.

So we'll go with the first Dead song I ever loved.

Jack-A-Roe is track 9 on Reckoning.

A Good Song, a Fair Friend, and Bowl of Beer Nuts

A couple of weekends ago, Casey recommended The Felice Brothers.

Martha followed a couple of days later with Langhorne Slim.

Much to love about this song, including, of course, the sponsorship message at the end.

Colette is track 6 on Langhorne Slim, but this is not the studio version.  I first heard it on Hype Machine, clicked through to the blog that originally posted it, stole it, and now offer it back to the world.

Lovely Rita

Whenever I'm walking back to a car that's parked on the street, I start singing this song.

When I started singing it this morning, I had a moment of pause as I realized for the first time that meter maid is way too sexy a name for a parking cop.

In related news, I want to see if Hype Machine will start pulling music off this blog, so I was going to start appeasing Big Music and adding mp3 store links to the ends of song posts, but I couldn't find Lovely Rita on either Amazon or iTunes, so forget Big Music.  I'll start adding links to albums available on Swaptree.

Lovely Rita is track 10 on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
