Six Twigs, One Chainsaw

In the following photograph, Brent the Mushroom Hunter is carrying a chainsaw.  Attached to his backpack is a hardhat and a pair of earmuffs, both examples of reasonable chainsaw co-cargo.  Poking out of the backpack, however, are, according to my count, six small sticks.  The photograph, therefore, is a mystery and, thus, a riddle.

Anyone want to try to solve it?

Digestive Versatility

Brent the Mushroom Hunter picked me up at the airport today.

We talked about long distance driving, biochar, carrots, radishes, oak logs, and shiitakes.

And we noticed little gang of robins hopping around in the snow...

Brent: I wonder what they're eating these days. Robins eat bugs.
Jake: Good question. I guess they must eat grass and seeds and stuff like that too.
Brent: Yeah. Pretty amazing, though. That'd be like us eating wood chips.

Only Yesterday

When I picked up this van (the wheels that'll carry us to the inauguration) last night, the Enterprise guy had left the radio tuned to a nothing but '90s rock station.  So I've been listening.  And brushing back up.

'90s rock was, after all, one of my first music loves.

The first concert I ever went to was Stone Temple Pilots in West Philly in summer 1994.  I went with Brent the Mushroom Hunter (before he was a mushroom hunter, of course) and Tara, that summer's babysitter (for my cousins, my sister, and, whether we admitted it or not, us 12 year olds too).  Someone smashed our windshield during the show, so we hung in the police station and Tara played banjo while we waited for my mom and aunt to come get us.  Brent got a totally sweet tie dye STP t shirt.  I STILL regret that the one I bought was black and white.

Anyway, this song came on while the van and I were driving to Dover, DE this morning.  Yeah.  Dover, DE.  Capital of the First State.  It was awesome.

Interstate Love Song is track 4 on Purple.

Two Bios

I did some registering today.

At Brent's suggestion, I joined soapboxxer.com (or, rather, went to soapboxxer.com, found out that I'd already joined, noticed that I hadn't filled out a profile, and decided to make that happen before asking the community if they share my sentiments about Bo Jackson), and, thanks to the generosity of my friends over at XBOSoft, I registered for the Web 2.0 Expo in New York.

I always have a little moment of indecision before filling out a bio or profile or about me field.

So many options.

Here's what came out today:

For the Web 2.0 Expo, something trying to be reasonably informative:

I'm a rookie entrepreneur building an online community and information dissemination tool called The Carrot Project.  It's a brand comparison engine, something similar in kind to Consumer Reports but focused not on product quality but rather on the social and environmental responsibility of the businesses behind brands.  Acorn Energy, an energy technology holding company (venture investors in not so sexy cleantech projects), made me their Entrepreneur in Residence six months ago, so, by day, or at least for a solid chunk of most days, I work with Wall St. investors and technology companies connected to the energy industry.  I blog at www.moreperfectmarket.com.

And for SoapBoxxer, something a little less informative:

When my changeup is working, I'm a very good Wiffleball player.
